Note
|
The Dixon ancestors came from Worksop in Nottinghamshire, England. Charles Dixon aged 23 (Sawyer), his wife Mary (nee Kirton) aged 22, their daughter Sarah aged 3 and their son David aged 8 months departed Gravesend, England on the ship "London" on the 2nd of January 1842. They arrived in Port Nicholson, Wellington, New Zealand on the 1st of May 1842. Also travelling with them was Charles's brother Joseph aged 26 (Sawyer), his wife Mary aged 26, their sons John aged 2 and Joseph aged 9 months. Their son Joseph died at sea on the 3rd of January 1842 from pheumonia. The ship "London" was 700 tons, the captain was Thomas Atwood and the surgeon superintendent was W M Turnbull MD. Charles set up a dairy farm in Karori and he was part of the group that set up the Small Farms Association in 1853 whose aim was to provide affordable access to land for the ordinary man. In May 1854 Charles, Mary and their first 10 children left Wellington for the Wairarapa. They were one of the first pioneer families to settle in Masterton. They set up their farm, naming it Worksop Farm after the Nottinghamshire town where they grew up, and an accommodation house which was located between Casel and Kaka Streets. The accommodation house burnt down in the 1880s. Dixon Street in Masterton is named in honour of Charles and Mary Dixon. |
