Bernard enlisted in the 98th Foot Regiment in Belfast on 4th September 1816. He was stationed in Newport, Isle of Wight on 14th September 1817. His daughter Sarah was born there. The Regiment was disbanded on 20th April 1818 after service in Canada. On 21st April 1818 he was attached to the 55th Foot Regiment which was posted to Ireland in 1820 and then to South Africa. He was medically discharged from the Army on 31st May1825 in consequence of being ruptured on the public works at the Cape of Good Hope. He had served for 7 years and 270 days. |
