Starting his apprenticeship at thirteen years of age, he spent around five years sailing around the english coast. He came to Australia on the Hannibal at aged nineteen or twenty and later became Captain of the Fortuna, a ship that cost $42000 when launched in 1875. Weighing 1857 tons, it was 269 feet long and had a beam of 41 feet. It was later renamed the Maquarie. He was also Captain of the La Hogue. He retired on 30th December 1897 at the age of 61, after having spent almost fifty years at sea. |
