SMH - Fri.13 May 1927
DEATH OF MR. WILLIAM PEARSE.
The death occurred on Wed., at his residence, Sparon, Commonwealth Parade, Manly of Mr.William Pearse, formerly of Plashett, Jerry's Plains, at the age of 86 yrs. Mr.Pearse, who enjoyed the distinction of being the oldest member of the Union Club, was a son of the late Mr.Joseph Pearse, whose residence, Tivoli, Rose Bay, has now become the Kambala Girls' School. He became the owner of Plashett Station, in the Hunter River district, in the early 1860's, when he purchased that property from the late Sir John Robertson. His passing thus severs another link with the romantic days of early settlement in this State. It is on record that the drover, Clarke, whose death at the hands of a bushranger is commemorated by a monument in the ranges between Quirindi & Scone, was at the time of his untimely end, under engagement to Mr.Pearse on a cattle-droving contract, Mr.Pearse himself, scorning the difficulties associated with a journey that would even now be regarded as a formidable undertaking, would frequently in his younger days travel from Plashett to his second property, Collymongle, on the Barwon, on horseback, with an aboriginal as sole companion. He purchased Collymongle in 1867, & relinquised the property in 1901.
In 1866 Mr. Pearse married Miss Langley, a sister of the late Bishop Henry Langley & of Bishop John Langley. He retained an active interest in pastoral pursuits until, in 1914, while attempting to run down a fox on horseback, he was injured through his mount falling. During the later years of his life he resided at Moss Vale and subsequently at Turramurra.
He is survived by Mrs.Pearse, 4 daughters - Mrs.R.J.Crane of Newcastle, Miss Elsa Pearse of Manly, Mrs.C.H.Nash of Melbourne & Mrs. A.E.Mackenzie of Turramurra and 2 sons - Messrs. Joseph and Aylmer Pearse.
The funeral took place yesterday at the South Head Cemetery, after a service at All Saints' Church, Woollahra. Canon Langley officiated at the graveside, assisted by Canon Harris of Blayney.
