A Pastoralist, Horse Breeder and Racehorse Owner, he built Newmarket Stables at Randwick and won the Melbourne Cup in 1877 with Chester, and again in 1883 with Martini-Henry. In partnership with his brothers Francis and George, James leased Belltrees, near Scone, from William Charles Wentworth in 1848, bought it in 1853 and later added the adjoining Waverley station. He also had interests in Bando, owned Cranbrook in Rose Bay and other property in Kirkham, Narellan. He married in St. Matthias, Denman, New South Wales. |
