The Congregational Church in England and Wales, Yearbook 1903, page 202 gives an Obituary for John as follows:-
THANE, John Dancer of Fowey, was born in London. December 9, 1826. When comparatively young, Mr. Thane made his home in Australia. His occasional efforts in philanthropic and religious circles were much appreciated; and after a brief period of devoted toil he was ordained to the regular work of the ministry at Young Lambing Flat, New South Wales, February 11, 1863. [Lambing Flat, was the site of one of the earliest Gold discoveries in the Colony of New South Wales] Returning to his native country in 1868, he accepted a call to Brill. His pastorate there continued until 1874, when he removed to Bottisham, in Cambridgeshire, where he laboured with acceptance for six years. In 1880 Mr. Thane undertook the pastorate at Fowey, in Cornwall. A new church and schoolroom were opened in the year 1887, but in the following year Mr. Thane deemed it advisable to resign the regular work of the ministry. Continueing his residence in Fowey, he rendered occasional help in the church there and elsewhere, and, although at times a great sufferer, he made it a point to attend the morning service as often as possible. Warm hearted and genial, his counsels and supplications were highly valued. In temperance circles he was well known, and in visiting the sick his words brought consolation to many. His own sufferings, though intermittent, wereat times most acute, but he bore all with exemplary patience. In the spring of 1902 his weakness and pain became more intense and he frequently expressed a "desire to be with Christ". He passed peacefully away on Monday May 5 1902 in his seventy-sixth year.

In an eMail, dated June 1, 2004, Edward [Ted] Thane included the following:-
"It appears that JDT went to Australia twice, first of all to Hobart, where Charles Windermere Thane(1849) and Robert Frederick Thane(1851) were born, he must have returned to England one or two years after Robert Frederick was born because the next child was William Henry(1854) he was born in Chipping Barnet Hertfordshire. Then followed Ellen Maria(1857) born in London. And then John(1858)sometime after John was born he must have returned to Australia where he had a pastorate in Young Lambing Flat, NSW, this is acording to the Congregational Church year book of 1903, his pastorates were as follows: Young Lambing Flat, NSW 1862-68 Brill, Buckinghamshire 1869-74 Bottisham, Cambridgeshire 1874-80 Fowey, Cornwall 1880-88 When he again returned to England the following children were born: Florence Julia(1869) Walworth George(1870) Brill Edward Ernest(1874) Brill Emily Frances(1876) Bottisham According to the 1881 census he lived at 2 Place Cottage, Fowey. 1891 census he lived at Bull Hill, Fowey. 1901 census he lived at 1 Harbour View, Fowey.
