Note

ISAAC MILLARD STURGILL was the last of the 365 known great grandchildren of Francis Sturgill Sr and Rebecca Hash. He was also the father of Mack Howard Sturgill who helped to revise and update this history of our family - DAS

ISAAC MILLARD STURGILL and Cora Clyde Peacock were married in Grayson Co. VA, and began housekeeping on Cabin Creek; then they lived with his mother, at his homeplace, and finally settled in Smyth County VA, where he bought a farm on the South Fork of the Holston river. As a young bachelor, I.M., as he was called, worked in the coal mines in W.VA.
In Symth County, he became foreman at the Lincoln Furniture Factory, in Marion, where he worked until 1939. A born politician, he was elected supervisor of Sinclars District for 16 years. A devout Republican, hefinally bolted that party in 1954, ran on an independant ticket and lost his seat on the Symth Co. Board of Supervisors. Four years later, he ran on the same ticket, and won. A devout member of the South Fork Baptist Church, near his home, he taught Sunday school there, and served as a Decon of the church for years.
Known and respected throughout the county as "Big Ike", apparently to distinguish him from "singing Ike" of Konnarock, he had most of the Sturgill family characteristics, except a big nose. He died unexpectedly at home and is buried in the South Fork Cemetery. -pg 124
