[Phil's Copy.FTW] !resided Beest, Schoonrewoerd, Holland. Moved to Holland l6l5. "Son of Sebastian y Cortez" The above is probably from "An Early History of the Courtright Family"which was totally undocumented and which apparently asserts that this"Cortez" fought for the Duke of Orange and that the name of the town wasnamed for him. The latter is untrue, however: Kortrijk dates from Romantimes, when it was called Cortoriacum -- a Latin form of an old Celticname. From Mar. 1578 to Feb. 1580, Calvinist "iconoclasts" occupied thetown and plundered and damaged some churches. These "malcontents" weredriven out, and King Philip II forgave the city for the damage. Mostlikely, our Sebastian was a "malcontent". |
