In 1330 or 1331, King Edward III restored to him the lands and honoursthat his father had forfeited. Prior to this they had been in thepossession of Edmund, Earl of Kent (the 6th son of King Edward I), whowas attained and beheaded in 1330.
In 1334 Richard was made Justiciar of North Wales for life. In 1339governor of Carnarvon Castle; in 1345 Sherriff of Shropshire for life. Hedistinguished himself in the French wars, being Admiral of the West1340-1 and 1345-7 and commanding the second division at the Battle ofCrecy in 1346. He was at the fall of Calais in 1347.

In 1361, upon the death of his aunt Joan de Warenne, he succeeded to thevast Warenne estates and to the Earldom of Surrey.
