Note

[Hahn-Powell-Ford.FTW]

"Levi married Polly Hankinson, of Stillwater, 1797, and there . . . hereared
his six sons." "A romantic story of Levi's early courtship . . . Polly
Hankinson, from across the Blue Ridge, had once visited at the house ofJohn
Layton's father . . . she related the following incident: Sometime priorto
this (visit) she had attended a public gathering on horseback. After, starting
for her home, a young man, also on horseback, came riding up behind herwith
the apparent intention of approaching by her side, when deeming his action
somewhat presumptuous (sic) she put spurs to her horse and left him in the
distance to turn about or pursue his onward journey chagrined and alone. The
young man was Levi Rosenkrans. After consideration, Polly concluded thatshe
had been somewhat hasty in thus leaving him, and regretted having done so.
John Layton, being a friend of both, tendered his services in the way ofan
apology, or explanation to Levi. Levi renewed his attentions with good
success, and they were eventually married at stillwater, as the churchrecords
show. The following record is found there:"Married- at the home of herfather,
in Stillwater, Polly Hankinson to Levi Rosenkrans, of Walpack.""
