Berengarius, the earliest known member of this family was Count in theLommengouw in 907. This area was situated between the Sambre and Meuserivers in present-day Belgium. Their main stronghold became Namur(Namen). The County was always under pressure from its more powerfulregional rivals Liège (Luik), Hainaut, Luxembourg and Brabant, and itlost the city of Dinant in 1100. Namur did expand eastward under CountHenri IV "The Blind" who became Count of Luxembourg, Stavelot-Malmédy,Durbuy and Laroche as well. After his death a lengthy war broke outbetween Hainaut and Luxembourg for the County of Namur. Eventually, in1263 the County had to be sold to Gwijde III of Dampierre, Count ofFlanders. |
