Burgundy can lay claim to the honor of being the oldest post Romankingdom of Europe. In the year A.D. 413, three years after the sack ofRome by the Goths, Gunther established the Burgundian Kingdom on thebanks of the Rhine with its capital at Worms. The Burgundians wereclosely related to the Goths, and, like them, probably had southernNorway or Sweden as their homeland and migrated to central Europe by wayof the island of Bornholm. They settled first in Poland and then in
southern Germany.
Gunther was the head of the ruling clan known as the Nibelungs. TheBurgundians were the most Romanized and civilized of all the barbariantribes. In 436, Gunther moved his people accross the Rhine and into theRoman province of Gaul. This provoked enough fear in the Emporer that hecalled upon the assistance of the universally feared Huns who were leadby Attila. The Burgundians were massacred in the ensuing battle andGunther was among the dead. Recovery from this loss, however, was veryswift.
