His ancestry is a matter of hot dispute. The only nearly contemporarysource on the matter is Richer, who stated in the 10th century thatRobert's father was "Witichin".
The genealogy from the "Dictionary of Royal Lineage" has Robert's fatherTheotbert, Count of Autun (RIN 3461).
Weis' "Ancestral Roots . . .", which reflects a more recent opinion hashis pedigree as I've shown it here. (48:17), (181:6), calls him RutpertIV,
Count in Wormgau; of Anjou, Blois, Tours, Auxerre, and Nevers; killed 15Sep 866.

The matter was one of great debate but quite some time ago. The crucialstudy was done by K Glockner "Lorsch und Lothringen" in Zeitschrift furdie Geschichte des Oberrheins, 89, 1936/37, 301-54. The identificationof Rutpert IV count in the Oberrheingau with Robert count of Paris is nowconsidered most likely. Robert like many other
Lotharingian nobles entered the service of Charles the Bald in 852following territorial squabbles between Charles and his brothers. You mayfind an article by K F Werner helpful: "Noble Families in Charlemagne'sKingdom" in a collection of papers entitled The Medieval Nobilityedited and translated by Timothy Reuter (1979), 172 f.

Recently (1989) Luiz de Mello Vaz de Sampayo suggested in a well-arguedpaper that Richer's "Witichinus" hypothesis (Witichinus as father ofRobert le Fort) may stand on solid ground. He takes Witichinus asWittchen -
Little Witus, or better as Witus (Guido) the Young. He still plugs thewhole family into Gloeckner's Robertini but from a side branch. Somereasonable onomastics support his claim. (Raizes & Trofeus, no. 2.)
