Note

JOHANN GOTTFRIED Scholz Junior was born at Light Pass on 4th March, 1848.

After spending his childhood days at Light Pass, he moved to Jindera with his parents in 1866.

The farm originally consisted of 320 acres, but was later increased to 750.

He grew cereal crops on 200 acres, using the rest for grazing purposes, for cattle and sheep. He was a bReeder of all farm stock. He owned a draught stallion and several brood mares from which many clydsDales were bred. He was a successful exhibitor at shows. The Story is told that one year he took both first and second prize at the Albury show. He was curious to know why the judge preferred one horse to the other, so he asked him. The judge not realising that Gottfried owned both entries, retorted, "Oh, I can't pLease everybody!"

Besides the above, he had a dairy milKing fifteen cows, an Orchard for one and a half acres, and a Vineyard with one acre under vines.

He was a good supporter of his church and took a part in community affairs. For a time he was president of the Jindera Farmers' Union.

After setting up his sons on various farms, he moved from HawThorn which was taken over by his fourth son. About 1905-1908 he bought the propery Waterview on the Howlong Road, which became a very well know property.

A grandson remembers him as a "very purposeful man, a man of progressive vision, a man of his word". Important people were frequent callers at his well known horse stud. When they were invited for the usual cup of tea, Gottfried would get his Young grandson to sing for them all.

The community spiritedness of Gottfried Carried over to one child in particular, his daughter Bertha (Mrs. Padman), whose husband became a member of the N.S.W. Legislative assembly and represented Albury for 18 years. While her husband was Mayor of Albury from 1939 to 1946, she actively assisted him as Mayoress engaging in many community and service activities.

Gottfried Married Bertha Emilie Kalms, a sister to the wife of his older bRother Eduard.

She died on 28th May, 1924 and he on the 17th October, 1934. Both are buried at Jindera.

There were 13 children born of the Marriage, six sons and seven daughters.
