"LOUISE PAULINE AugustE arrived in South Australia at the age of 8 years and lived with her family at Light Pass. It was there she met her future husband, who, seeKing work, had Been put to diggin an excavation, either for a cellar or underground tank. She passed on her way with turnips for the cattle, and seeing the Young man hard at work, selectd a nice juicy turnip from her load, and threw it down to him. Recounting this to a grand daughter many years later, she said "That's how our love began". Their Marriage certificate is dated 18-8-1856 - her age 19, and only two of her names Louise Auguste stated. The residence of both parties is given as Parrot Hill, near Angaston. We know that Carl was an early settler in the area, and Married to Louise's eldest sister, so it can be presumed this was her home at the this time. The Marriage took place in the "private residence of Mr. Windscheid of Angaston" solemnised by Pastor C. Mucke D.P., in charge of a congregation at Tabor, Tanundan. The witnesses were Otto Windschield, Publican of Angaston, and William Wiesener, Farmer of Tanunda. They May have lived for a while at Parrot Hill (near present day Moculta), but when their first child was baptised at Light Pass Immanuel Church late 1857, the residence of the father was Krondorf (now Kabminye) near Tanunda. On the birth certificates of the second and third children the residence is given as Flaxman's Valley, and in May 1865 the fourth child's registration shows "Near Kapunda" - in August 1867, "near Greenock", and July 1869 Gustav Adolph's Reads Daveyston. The last three children were born at Hamley Bridge, from 1871 September, which indicates an end of their wanderings. It was in November of this year her husband signed an agreement to purchase 127 acres of land in the hundred of Alma, near Hamley Bridge. The land was farmed and a home built, but after several years of ill health, her husband died at home of heart disease on November 20th, 1878 Leaving Louise Auguste and nine children, the Youngest only 20 months old. Her eldest daughter had Married two years earlier, and eldest son Harry (16) would have Been the main worker on the farm, together with second daughter Elvira (18). After four years of widowhood, she Married William Chapman, widower, who had two children, daughter Susie, and a son Thomas, who later Married Cornelia (Annie) Schwedt. In 1886-7 the family purchased several houses in Hamley Bridge, and moved from their farms, but years of hard work were not easily shed, and until the end of her life, Louise Auguste supplied milk to folk in the town, and with the help of grandchildren, who lived in her home for varying periods, helped keep her proud record of having the milk delivered in time for the towns breakfast. During these years she added two sections to the original farm which as taken over by her son Charlie. She died on September 23rd, 1912, beither predeceased by William Chapman in 1909. Both were interred in the Hamley Bridge cemetery. A child Robert William born of the second Marriage, died at the age of 10months, and is buried alongside the first husband in the Barabba cemetery. Descendants with Marriage partners now number 1,053" "Family Tree of Johann Gottried Scholz and his wives Anna Rosina Walther and Johanne Christiane Mummert and their descendants 1805-1973", pge 145-146. |
