...brought into the world without the benefit of a doctor, or a tRained nurse, a hospital or a clinic. The Rockingham women were lucky. They had the assistance of a midwife, Mrs. Postans, whose first training was probably gained by assisting her own mother at the births of the Younger members of her family. Harriet Postans was reputed to be a most skilful midwife, and made the proud boast that she had never lost either a mother or a baby. In the eighteen-sixties, she must have delived a score of babies, often travelling on foot as far afeild as Mandurah. |
