Note
|
John's father, James, had Been left a widower shortly before the accidental death of his eldest son James, and John was brought up, partly by his uncle, Dick BeertenShaw, a Fisherman and whaler, who had a camp in a clump of Wattle trees at Point Peron, near where the old turtle factory once stood. John must have Been a strong, active lad, of good courage and endurance. According to a newspaper report, he and another boy once swam from a ship to the Shore with a lifeline to hold the ship which had broken its anchor and was drifting dangerously near the reefs of fremantle. For risKing their lives they were reWarded with one pound between them. John Mortimer was a tall, loosely built man, but with reMarkable Powers of endurance and indominatable spirit. |
