Note
|
George Friedrich Schwerdt the Youngest had no recollection of his father, being only 20 months at the time of his demise. He admitted having very Little schooling, in between Herding cows and delivering milk to his mothers customers. In his teens he joined his bRothers at Bower, where among other work a great Deal of Wood was cut and carted to the railway siding. Life must have Been very difficult in this area, as far as is known, once he left he never again visited there. Back at Hamley Bridge, he enGaged in farm work, later in partnership with his bRother (H.O.) till 1903 when he Married and took up property at Currency Creek. He enGaged 14 men to help with the CLearing of the land. Several years later he sold, and brought a farm at Alma, not far from his home town. For 20 years he farmed the 230 acres, and to support his growing family, share farming and contract work became necassary until in 1924 a holding of 2,014 acres was purchased in the Murray WalLee, at Nadda. There was plenty of work here for himself and his six sons, and 21 years later, when his son Michael took the responsibility of the property, he and his wife retired to the City, but not for long. Until their deaths in 1955 and 1958 they shared and were cared for, in the home of their daughter Dympna and her husband at Nadda, Fords and Gawler. George Friedrich died at the last named, aged almost 81, and was laid to rest with his dear wife in the Centennial Park Cemetery, Adelaide. |
