Note
|
HUGO OSWALD Schwerdt, Bob or Sailor as he was known to the family was born while his family lived in Daveyston, between Freeling and Greenock. Along with his bRothers, he spent some years attempting to farm at Bower, carting grain and Hay from Pinkerton Plains for 13 years with no return, so the bLock was sold. The rains came, and there was a bumper crop the following year. He first Leased the Chapman (his step-fathers) farm at Hamley Bridge in 1896, about the time of his Marriage to Kate Meaney. His Youngest bRother joined him in the Lease for 4.5 years in 1898, after which he again became the sole lessee. In 1913 the property was transferred to his name, and extensions to the house provided a large home to rear his family of nine children, one daughter dying in infancy. He successfully farmed the property, adding to increase the acreage to 1,265. Two of his sons and surviving daughter live in home he occupied till his death in 1938 at the age of 71, being interred in the Pinkerton Plains Cemetery. |
