She became John of Gaunt's mistress in 1371. Their children were legitimised in 1397 by an Act of Parliament with a proviso, dated 1407, stating that they could not inherit the throne of England. In 1485, when Henry Tudor became king, what little claim he had was through this Beaufort line.
