Note
|
Originally from Wales, she was the first of as many as fifteen mistresses. She met Charles in the summer of 1648 in The Hague, and she gave birth to James, later Duke of Monmouth, in 1649. Lucy was her lover's constant companion, but he make the mistake of leaving her behind when he left The Hague in 1650. When Charles returned, Lucy appears to have had at least two affairs, with Colonel Henry Bennet, and Theobald, 2nd Viscount Taaffe. She gave birth to a daughter, Mary Crofts, in May 1651. Many sources include Mary as Charles's bastard, although her birth seems to have been eleven months after Charles left the Hague. Charles left Lucy to prostitution and she probably died of venereal disease. |
