Note

Elected by the narrow margin of 71 to 68 over his vice-president and successor, Thomas Jefferson, He presided from 1797 to 1801. He was the first president to live in Washington, D.C. He died on the same day and just a few hours after Thomas Jefferson. He was also responsible for appointing George Washington as Commander-in-Chief of the Army and insisted that Thomas Jefferson write the
draft for the declaration of independence.
