The first president born west of the Mississippi River, he won the 1928 election over Alfred E. Smith, by a popular vote of 21,391,993 to 15,016,169, and an electoral vote of 444 to 87. Charles Curtis served as his vice-president. Largely blamed for the consequences of the great depression of 1929, he lost the 1932 election to Franklin D. Roosevelt. |
