The Census for the 6 th June 1841 HO 107/583/1/41 for Hulme, Manchester, address unclear but probably Lower Cambridge Street, records James Penny age 9 years was the only son of John age 30 and Isabella Penny age 28, he had two sisters Sarah age 6 and Isabella age 1 year. On 28th October 1856 James's mother was killed by manslaughter. The Census for 1851 HO 107/2220/811/17 will record the family living at No. 44, Boundary Street East, Hulme it will record JOHN penny as a Greengrocer and son James age 19 years a Shopkeepers helper. Copy of the census is not obtainable due to water damage of the original. The marriage of James Penny to Mary Ann Gill on the 6th September 1857 at Manchester Cathedral entry No. 121 in the Register. After their marriage they both changed their surname to "Pennill" by an amalgation of Penny and Gill. It is understood that the name change was to avoid the nickname of "penny pinching" by customers to their greengrocery shop, however the reason might have been to avoid the stigma caused by the circumstances surrounding the death of his mother. The marriage Certificate names James Penny (spelled Penney on the Certificate ) age 23 Bachelor and a Greengrocer of 84,Medlock Street, Hulme. John Penny the father is also named as a Greengrocer. Mary Ann Gill age 19, a Spinster of 15 Southern Street, Hulme, and her father John Gill, a Shoemaker. The witnesses to the marriage are Fredrick Johnson and Elizabeth Gill. The Census for the 7th April 1861 RG9 2887 7 page 7 for No. 84, Medlock Street, Hulme lists James Pennill, age 27, Greengrocer, his wife Mary A Pennill , son James age 1year and a servant, Margaqret Hammond age 15. The Census for the 2nd April 1871 RG 10/3974/ page 22 is for Withington Institution, Nell Lane Hospital; James Pennill age 37, born Manchester, occupation Hawker is person 9 on the record and he is listed as Lunatic. The 1871 census record for his wife and family has not yet been found. The census for 3rd April 1881 RG 11/3925/4/ page 2 for No. 8 George Street, Hulme records James Pennill age 47, occupation Hawker, wife Mary Ann Pennill age 46, son James a Hawker 21, Martha a Tailoress 19, George Alfred a Hawker 16, John Henry 10, Mary Elizabeth 7, Margaret age 6 Census for 5th April 1891 RG12/ 3193/ / page 10 for 112 Great Jackson Street, Hulme: James Pennill, age 58, widower, occupation Self employed fishmonger, also Martha 27 Tailoress, George Alfred 26 self employed fishmonger, John Henry 20 self employed fishmonger, Mary Elizabeth 18 Tailoress, Margaret 16 Tailoress. Census for 31st March 1901 RG 13/3705/90 page 3 for 112 Great Jackson Street, Hulme; James Pennill widower age 69 Fishmonger and greengrocer on own account, Mary Elizabeth age 28 shop assistant at home, Margaret age 26 shop assistant at home. James Penny (originally James Penny ) died age 79 in December 1909 |
