Frederick Hilliler Sep 16 1910, was the elder son of Amos Hillie
r and Leah Crews. His SunDay School report card of January 192
0 states "Lessons learnt well".. That would have been before h
e and second cousin John Cake lerned to smoke in a covered dry w
ell. He spent a summer worKing in St Pierre but was aFisherma
n always. His first wife was Rosanna Spawn whom he married i
n Feb 1939. A son, Leonard, was born Dec 23, 1939 but Rosanna d
ied in June 1941.Leonard was 'adopted' by cousin Bessie Day an
d Fred Hutchings in Borwn's Arm, N.F. His second marriage was t
o beatrice Alice Woodland, the sister of Vioet Woodland, his bro
ther's late wife. They had four children by 1950. Butin 1954
, he was diagnosed with tuberculosis and spent the next fiftee
n months in a sanatorium in St. John's. He was Granted leave wh
en his grandfather,Mark Henry Hillier, died in Nov 1955 to sett
le his affairs. His eldest daughter, Violet, contracted tubercu
losis also in 1954. then rheumatic fever andmissed most of tha
t schoool year but learned to love reading. He bought hera rad
io so that she had contact with the outside world. She survive
d andmarred in 1968 after a traditional 'leave to marry my daug
hter' letter whichcost him a weekend of writing and rewriting
. His second daughter Leah, married in 1964 and soon gave hi
m two grandsons. David and Jim. His son Leonardmarried in Bro
wn's Arm and sent him a picture of his first grandaughter, Rosan
na. His younger son, Lloyd, became a Fisherman even though he w
as takenout in the dory in rough weather to try and be persuade
d otherwise. His youngest daughter, Ell, a teacher at St. Lawre
nce, was at home when Frederick Hillier suffered a stroke mendin
g a fence on the morning of October 13, 1969. He passed away su
