Mark Henry Hillier, Mar 2 1862 - N0v 18 1955 was a twin brothe
r of Luke Robert Hillier, sons of Jame Hillier and Ann Bonnell
. They grew up to be dory Fishermen like their ancestors but at
tended school long enough to be taught 'readin' writin' and ciph
erin'...They both settled in Muddy Hole, Lamaline, whereMark ma
rried Hannah King and Luke married Hannah Hepditch. The wives w
ereknown as "Hannah Mark, and "Hannah Luke' They shared wel
l together outsideMark's land, an arrangement which had each o
f them drawing water from 'his'own side with a very large roc
k in the middle. Mark and Hannah raised only three children t
o adultHood, Amos, Alice and George Aaron. The younger son, Geo
rge Aaron, and wife Ella Batten who shared his home, succumbed t
o tuberculosis in 1940 five years after Hannah died, leaving Mar
k to raise George Aaron's and Ella's two daughters, Muriel and F
lorence. In 1944 Mark asked his grandson Frederick who had marr
ied for the second time, to share his home and take care of hi
m in his old age. In the next six years, he became surroundedb
y four new great-grandchildren. He saw his grandson Fred, sen
t to a sanatorium in St John's for tuberculosis. Mark died in t
he home he had built 55 years earlier and was buried beside hi
s wife Hannah, near his twin brother Luke in the east side of S
