grated to New England in Nov 1637, and upon his arrival joined t
he Hutchinson party in the settlement of Rhode Island. He was o
ne of the chief persons in the affairs of that Colony, was pasto
r of the First Baptist Church at Newport, was agent of the Colon
y in England 1651-1663, being instrumental in procuring the Colo
nial charter in the latter year, and after his returnto Newpor
t was deputy governor of Rhode Island, 1669-1672. While in Engl
and he practised his profession as a physician and published tw
o books.
