ALICE TIMOTHY (TOD D)
Alice Timothy was born the 20th of December 1886 in Maeser , Uin
tah, Utah. She was married the 14th of August 1907 i n the Sal
t Lake Temple, Salt Lake City, Utah to Thomas Richardson Todd wh
o was born the 1stof August 1883 in Heber, Wasatch, Utah. He di
ed 2nd of August 1968 in Salt Lake City , Utah and was buried o
n the 5th of August 1968 in Salt Lake City, Utah. Thomas Richard
son Todd was the son of Thomas Todd Jr. and Harriet Richardson
. Alice died 21 October 1918 in Cedarview, Utah. Alice Timothy T
odd wasthe fifth child born to David and Martha Haws Timothy. L
ittle is known of her life after marri age to
Thomas Todd, except for the birth of her five children. Since s
he died when her oldest child was ten and her youngest child wa
s three, very few records were kept regarding her and her family
. The exception was an exceptionally well-written booklet regard
ing the Thomas RichardsonTodd family, (which including record
s from his second wife, Cora Powell, whoraised Alice's childre
n (after Alice died) . The few paragraphs regarding herhusband
, Thomas are recorded here: "In the fall of 1902, the family lef
t Heber and moved to Jensen, Utah (Uintah County), and purchase
d a 120 acre farm. The next 3-4 years, Tommy helped on the far
m part-time and also spent timeon a range in Easter Utah and We
stern Colorado, taKing care of about 100 Headof cattle. He als
o helped in building a railroad from Mack, Colorado, to Dragon
, Utah. One winter he worked in Ourray, Utah , helping build a f
erryboatacross the Green River.
He attended school in Uintah State Academy in Vernal,Utah , an
d also attended Brigham Young Academy in Provo, Utah In the spri
ng of 1906, he filed on a homestead Northeast of Roosevelt, Utah
, on the reservation that had just been opened for settlement i
n 1905. In the next few years he moved back and forth from Verna
l to Roosevelt." It is assumed that Thomas' moving back and fort
h from Vernal to Roosevelt was due largely in part tohis courts
hip with Alice Timothy, who lived in Jensen, near Vernal at tha
ttime.
Continuing with the written record of the Todd family: "On Octob
er 14,1907, he married Alice Timothy in the Salt Lake Temple
. Alice was the 5th child of David Timothy and Martha Elvira Ha
ws (they were the parents of 14 children)."
No history on Alice has been presented for the eleven years an
d 14Days that Thomas and Alice spent together, living in Jensen
, Utah (for the first three to six years), and then Roosevelt, U
tah, for all but the last sevenmonths of Alice's short life. I
n this author's mind, I can picture a busy Alice, taKing care o
f her little son, Irwin, bor n in 1908. She would have fedthe c
hickens and gathered eggs, planted a large garden, perhaps tende
d a fruit orchard . Her Days would have been filled with laundry
, cleaning and baKing. Her twins, Kendall D. and Kenneth T., wer
e born in Vernal in 1910, and they would have been more than a h
andful, since
Irwin was only 2 years and five months old . Perhaps those bus
y years until 1914 were spent hoping for a daughter, as Alice ch
anged and washed a mountain of diapers, probably a daily chore f
or seven years. I also envision a welcome relief on Alice's face
whenshe finally got the twins potty-trained only to discover an
other baby was onits way. Nor, do I believe that she minded th
e situation . By the time her little daughter was born in Februa
ry 191 4, the twins were three, and Irwin, abig, brave five an
d a half.
Knowing the importance that the Timothy's stressed on education
, I am certain Alice would have sensed a keen desire to starthe
r children early with their education . Perhaps she'd already ta
ught Irwin his colors, numbers or alphabet. Naomi would haven pr
obably been in diapersstill when Donald J. arrived late in Augu
st 1915, in Blue Mesa , Utah (nearDuchesne). Alice Timothy
Todd had plenty to do o
