In Their Own Words
Mother of Fourteen
Weber County
On December 24,1848, I was married at the age of 21 years to Sh
adrack Holdaway, age 26. He was one of the 500 Mormon Battalio
n who volunteered to fight in the Mexican War. At the close of t
he war he went with part of the company to California. Here he w
as discharged from service in the Army. He was also among the fi
rstto find gold in California. Soon after, he came to Salt Lak
e Valley bringingwith him about $2,000 worth of gold nuggets. T
he following March, 1849, my father and family, together with th
irty other families were called to go southto Utah Valley to se
ttle that part of the country. I did not go as I intendedgoin
g back to the States with my husband to get some machinery for m
aKingwoolen goods. We left Salt Lake City in company with thirt
een others, among them Brother Lorenzo D. Young and wife and Doc
tor Bernhisel, who was going toWashington D.C. on business. Pre
vious to leaving Salt Lake City we had prepared a water tight wa
gon box. We ferried ourselves across the Green River withoars i
n this wagon box. It served a very good purpose. We reached th
e Platte River which we had to cross on a rail. Here ten men o
f the company stoppedto help ferry Saints across the river. Bro
ther Young and his wife, Doctor Bernhisel, my husband and mysel
f went on to Fort Laramie which was then an old Government stati
on. The second Day after we left the company, we began to meett
rain after train of gold seekers going to California.
