The following is taken froma letter to Geri Pegler from old fri
ends of the famly, Frances Smith.
"Now,I want to tell you about our friendship with your grandpar
ents Jim and DaisyCrawford. In friendship they were so whole h
earted - was i Ceasar that said, " friend should bear his friend
's infirmities"? anyway, they put special value on their friend
ships - a friend could do no wrong. It seems like Jim had a bro
ther - George? in Illinois they used to visit. I don't recall t
hathe mentioned others. Jim considered himself to be an agnost
ic, or, at leastdid not believe in a here after, would say "whe
n you're dead, yoou're dead."he told me his father was a preach
er, and that he would at times leave his wife and kids and hit t
he "sawdust trail". Jim was very bitter about this, heand hi
s mother and siblings were left to virtually starve while his fa
therwas out saving souls and being fed by the good folks he pre
ached to. Jim could not sstand the sound of hymns being sung
. Then while visiting us here inthe Ozsarks, he heard our old-
time music friends play and sing and he liked them all so much
, and said "I never thought I would enjoy hearing hymns sung,bu
t now I do." Then the last time they visited us, they were gath
ering upto leave, Jim again brought up the subject of the final
ity of death, and as usual we argued a little about it and he sp
rung his favorite line "There is nohereafter- when you're dead
, your dead." I said, "Him Crawford, if you trulybelieved that
, and when you leave here to-Day, we might never meet again, cou
ld you bear to leave?" He turned away, looKing down, stood a min
ute, thenturned back again, with a chuckle and grin, and said "
you've got me!" I do believe, since he would often start thes
e arguments, that he secretly wanted to be cornered and made t
o admit that, Hes, he did believe. And it was like the bitterne
ss of years just slipped away. I treasure that memory. And o
fcourse Daisy chuckled and said, "I'm glad he's finally been ma
de to admit it."
Abt 1930 James mentions a cousin Luther Crawford in a letter t
o his son.He was writing from Ca. The following entry was fou
