Sarah Berrett, second child and only daughter of William and Mar
y Woodman was christened 8 feb 1767 in the old stone Church at S
teeple Ashton, England. When Sarah was about sixteen years ol
d (1783) she moved from the home of her youth in Snarlton and wi
th her parents moved into the former home of her grandparents, W
illiam and Susannah, on the corner of Silver and High Street i
n the village of Steeple Ashton (43 High Street in 1979). fro
mBerretts of Steeple Ashton by LaMar C. Berrett.
There is no record of Sarah'smarriage, and since she was lvin
g with her parents over the years and listedas the only perso
n or child living with her parents, it must be assumed she neve
r married. Other evidences lead to the same conclusion,l such a
s her father's will, written in 1808 which mentioned Sarah a
s a "spinster". Althoughshe never married and had children o
f her own, she had thirty nieces and nephews to love. Her thre
e brothers each had large families: William had eightchildren
, Robert had ten and Thomas had twelve.
Sarah lived approximately sixty-three years (1793-1846) in the "
Old Berrett Homestead" - longer than anyother Berrett apparentl
y. The 1837 Leasehold Survey shows Moses Butcher then John Wils
om as lease-holders of the "Old Berrett Homestead." It also sho
ws the two houses being occupied or sub-leased by Richard Rose a
nd Sarah Berrett.... Sarah was buried in Steeple Ashton 28 Oct 1
