John Watts Berrett records in his journal that his father, Joh
n "Had been a member of the Protestant Church for 30 years" befo
re becoming aMormon in 1847. He must have joined the Baptist o
r Methodist movement about1817. In 1845 the first Steeple Asht
on converts to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints w
ere baptized, and for the next thirty years, Churchservices wer
e held in various homes of the village. At least three were lic
ensed for the purpose. More than 121 people from Steeple Ashto
n were converted to "mormonism" and became members of the Churc
h of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. Another 93 converts fro
m nearby villages met with the "Saints"at Steeple Ashton. A to
tal of 214 people belonged to the Steeple Ashton Branch with th
e following distribution: Steeple Ashton 121; Trowbridge 21; Bul
Kington 8 Melklsham 17; Charlcott 4; West Lavington 9; Chalfor
d 1; Erlstoke 1;Littleton 1; West Lavington 9: Keevil 1; Hilper
ton 1; Weestbury 3; Misc. 20.(These figures indicate the "know
n" Mormons. There were others that are ). Ninety-one o
f the 214 converst to "Mormonism" emigrated to Utah in the Unite
d States during the years 1849-1879. The Berretts played a ver
y prominent roll in maKing Steeple Ashton the "Mormon Center' o
f midWestern Wiltshire. Thirty-four Berrets plus ten spouses ma
de the Berrett family the largest Mormon family in the village.

. Traveled inthe minestry for 6 years, Realeased in 1863 to em
igrate. Left London England, set sail on the ship Amozon. Arri
ved in New York July 12th, 1863. Arrived in Salt Lake City, 186
3. Married Eliza Hookway Dec, 16, 1865. Married byBishop Andr
ew Cahoon, sealed in the Endowment House March 23, 1867.

ed on our journey by road. Reached the settlement called Wyomin
g, Nebraska. Stayed there 9 weeks, My mother and sisterMary An
n, both dying in the same place and burried in the same grave
. Weproceeded on my journey across the plains in Captain W. Mc
Wilsons company, Thomas Taylor being freight agent. I reached S
alt Lake City, Nov 15 1865. OnDec 16, I was married to John Wa
tts Berret by Bishop Andrew Cahoon. Was sealed in the Endowmen
t House March 23 1867. Five boys were born to this union.
