...James Ringgold, w ho held a portion of the tractcalled "Hunt
ingfield," which was patented by his father. He also held the m
anor of Eastern Neck and was known in various records as lord o
f that manor.The manor of Eastern Neck was one of the early ma
nors erected under Lord Baltimore's conditions of planting and i
s cited by Mr. John Johnson in his article on "Old Maryland Mano
rs."
From the rent roll for Kent County it appearsthat a tract of la
nd called "Ringgold's Fortune," 150 acres, was surveyed forhi
m March 24, 1665, on the North side of the Chester River at th
e Head ofa baranch of Langord's Bay and was in the possession o
f his son Charles in 1707. Also a tract "The Plains," 600 acres
, was surveyed for him June 6, 1677,in Kent County on Langford'
s Bay and 300 acres of that tract were in possession of his so
n William in 1707. He was commissioned June 14, 1661, as one o
f the justices of the county court for Kent County. He was als
o commissionedas justice upon various other dates, September 28
, 1674, December 7,, 1675,March 25, 1676, January 25, 1675, Apr
il 20, 1676, October 30,1677 and July 13, 1680. He was twice m
arried. The name of his first wife has not been ascertained. T
hey had one chold, a son, who was known as Captain Thomas Ringgo
ld. His second wife was Mary Vaughan, daughter of Captain Rober
t Vaughan, who was commander of Kent, 1647 to 1652. By this mar
riage he has four sons: James, William John and Charles and on
e daughter Barbara. He died in 1686, andis said to have been f
ifty years of age. His will is dated May 18, 1686, was proven S
eptember 28, 1686 and is recorded in the office of the registe
r of wills for Kent County, Liber 1, page 13."
