wn in order to educate her sons. At this time the Rev. Dr. Will
iam Smith removed from Philadelphia, where he had been presiden
t of the College of Philadelphia. He took charge of the Chester
town Academy,which then had about 140 students. Dr. Smith wa
s a noted educator and in 1782 he founded Washington College. E
ach of Ann Barroll's sons were graduatesof Washington College
. The eldest, William Barroll, was one of the first five gradua
tes in the class of 1783.
