Note

Some genealogists have recorded Elizabeth's maiden name as Wolla
ston but no evidence has been located to substantiate this assum
ption. Elizabeth apparently was a woman of good sense and compet
ent in managing her affairs and looKingout for her sons Thoma
s and John. New Castle court records show that she wastitheable
, living on the North side of Christiana Creek, assessed with 1,
000 acres.
In 1684 Elizabeth Ogle became a historical figure by her involve
ment in the border dispute between Lord Baltimore and William Pe
nn. Samuel Land, Sherrif of New Castle, sent a letter dated 30 M
ay 1684 to Penn, reportingthat Jones Erskine and Andrew Tilley
, who lived near the Widow Ogle had beenwarned by Colonel Talbo
tt, under orders from Lord Baltimore, that if they didnot yiel
d obedience to Lord Baltimore, he would not yield obediance to L
ord Baltimore, he would in three weeks' time return and turn the
m out. On his return he erected a fort near Christiana Bridge, s
ix miles from New Castle. This location is now marked by a bronz
e tablet - a State Historical marker. Thedifferences of Lord Ba
ltimore and William Penn were settle, and Penn retained what ha
d been claimed by the Governor.
