James farmed on virgin soil east of Mesa, and raised excellent v
egetables. Everyone was amazed at his giant sweet potatoes, on
e of which weighed 32 pounds. The women Cooked these whole in th
e oven, and they were delicious.
The family was well fixed financially before they left Mesa.
The morning before shetook sick with pneumonia which caused he
r death, she hitched the horse to the cart and took her sister E
ffie for a ride. During the conversation she remarked, "Effie, w
e may never go riding again." She passed away a few Days aftert
his.
Collins Riley tells the following: "I was present when Sarah die
d,and witnessed Father and Uncle Henry Rogers administer to her
. Twice she came back to life, and twice she begged, "Why do yo
u bring me back?" Father turned to Henry and said, "That is enou
gh." Her last words were, "Let me go. I was happy."
