SARAH MELISSA HAKES
book: Collins Rowe Hakes Family pg 69
Compiled by HARRIET J. STRADLING...1952
Sarah was neat and clean in her person, and very particular in t
he care of her beautiful black hair. She wore it long shining br
aids, and was always careful to cover her Head before sweepin
g a floor.
Because of her cheerful disposition and ready wit, she was consi
dered very good company, and was loved by all her friends. Her m
ale relatives considered her abrilliant woman, and the women ad
mired her for her loving personality.
Shemarried James Charlesworth, and pursued with patience the ta
sk of making a home under hard pioneer conditions. She was gifte
d in knowing how to make thebest of the little she had to do wi
th. Neatness and order meant a great dealto her, and she worke
d hard to have her home always neat and shining. In addition, o
f course, she had much other urgent work to do, as did all othe
r pioneer women, and sometimes the house cleaning had to be don
e while the rest ofthe family slept at night. Her cellar was al
ways neat and clean. She loved the association of her family, an
d was a kind and loving mother, understandingher sons and daugh
ter. She kept a constant supply of good things in her cupboard
, and a hungry mouth was always sure to find a piece of cake, pi
e or atart at her house.
