Abraham and His Family
A Tribute
Abraham's affinity for women named Mary was evidenced again in h
is marriage on October 8, 1866 to Mary Ann Newby. They had six c
hildren: Isabel, George Edward, Elizabeth Ann, Thomas Henry, Joh
n Charles, and Margaret May. Mary Ann Newby died when her younge
st was thirteen years old. His fifth wife was Ellen Burton, sist
er of his first wife. Ellen had no children. Antipathy to thepr
actice of polygamy was being shouted from the seats of the Unite
d StatesCongress, and Abraham Chadwick found himself, as other
s did, with more wivesthan the law permitted. The consequence w
as six months in prison.
