Staker, William Henry
Colebrook, Charles, third Bishop of the Butler Ward, Salt Lake c
ounty,Utah, was born Dec, 20, 1854, in Salt Lake City, Utah, th
e son of Charles Colebrook and Virtue Ann Bowthorpe. His parent
s separated when he was but a child and he was raised on a far
m by his stepfather, Preston Lewis. For severalyears he followe
d railroading in Utah, Wyoming, Montana and Washington. In 188
4 (March 18th) he married Sarah McGhie (daughter of Wm. McGhie a
nd Mary McBlaine), born Nov. 11, 1866, in Provo Valley, Utah. Af
ter his marriage he settled in Butler, where he has resided eve
r since, his occupation being that ofa farmer. Being baptized w
hen about ten years of age, he was ordained an Elder in 1870 an
d a High Priest May 12, 1901, by John Henry Smith, and on the sa
me occasion, he was set apart a second counselor to Bishop Alv
a Butler. This position he held for ten years, until the death o
f Bishop Butler. Aug. 17,1913, he was ordained a Bishop and se
t apart to preside over the Butler Ward.Prior to this last ordi
nation he acted as first assistant superintendent ofthe Ward Su
nDay school and subsequently as superintendent. He also acted a
sschool trustee, member of the Jordan district school board fo
r three years,constable, etc.
