Note: Alexander McGhie, or "Sant" as he was called, was only thr
ee months old when his father departed Scotland for America in18
54. At age 16, he along with his father, William McGhie, Jr.,an
dhis older brother Billiek began working as laborers in a sawmi
ll in Big Cottonwood Canyon and he was so employed forabout te
n years In 1881, at age 28,
Alexander married Emma Rowan, and they settled in Butlerville, w
here they were blessed with four children before they made the d
ecision to move to Park City in order for Sant to seek employmen
t in the mines there. His brothers John, Joseph, and Thomas als
o made the move for the same reason. A fifth child, Oliver Calvi
n, was born to Sant and Emma while they were in Park City, but t
hey apparently remained there only a couple of years before retu
rning to Butlerville, probably because of concern about lead aff
ecting Sants' lungs whileworking as a miner. They established t
heir residence on the Old Mill Road about a block south of his f
ather's place where their two youngest children wereborn.
The Stairs Station power plant in Big Cottonwood Canyon was comp
leted in May 1896. It is possible that Sant may have been employ
ed in the construction of the plant and continued on as it wen
t into operation. When Utah Power and Light Company took over th
e Big Cottonwood power plants in 1815, he bacame an employee i
n that company and accumulated a total of thirty-five yearsof s
ervice by the time he retired in 1928.
His responsibilities with Utah Power over the years included tak
ing soundings of the deep reservior in the canyon which was loca
ted just above toDay's Storm Mountain campground at what was the
n called "Jones Cut". He also walked the wooden water flume tha
t stretched from the Stairs Station to the lower powerhouse in t
he mouth of the canyon to check for leaks. Charles Swan, supervi
sor of the lower plant would pick him up each Day and drive hi
m back up the canyon to his cabin located on the reservior.
He and Emma lived in the cabin, and during the summers, he woul
d sit on the porch smoking his pipe and fishing. Family member
s and other vistors had fond memories of the fish dinners serve
d by the McGhie's.
