Note

nn(Nancy) Munro, was the daughter of Hugh
Munro and Catherine Campbell. Sincethe family reportedly came t
o New
York in 1773 or 1774, Ann must have beenborn in the New World
: whether
in Johnstown, New York, or in Glengarry. Since the Glengarry lan
ds
were not opened for settlement and awarded until after 1783, i
t is most
likely that Ann was born in New York.... although it would hav
e been at
the height of the Revolution; her birth may have occurredtheref
ore in
one of the many camps in Quebec, such as St. Jean, Sorel or LaCo
lle. Her
father was enlisted in the KRRNY, and presumably left for Canad
a in 1776
with Sir John. It appears that there was some preliminary settle
ment in
Eastern Quebec, perhaps Caldwell's estate at LaColle, and Munr
o may have
moved his family there before finally settling in Glengarry. Th
e Crown
was not interested in having settlement on private lands, such a
s
Caldwell's Manor at LaColle, and promoted settlement in the wil
d interior
Westof the Ottawa River. Donald Ross, Ann's father-in-law, appa
rently
had an initial Grant at Caldwell's Manor, and other soldiers mos
t likely
did as well. It is likely that most of these soldiers, and thei
r
families, knew each other well prior to their arrival in what be
came,
Upper Canada; Munro, Donald Ross and many of the others who even
tually
settled in Glengarry, had previous military experience, being ve
terans
of the French-English struggle ofthe previous decades, as wel
l as being
previous residents of Johnson's lands in New York.
