Note

Oglethorpe's first stay in Georgia lasted just on two years an
d during that time James's sisters in England had been involvin
g Westbrook once again in theJacobite plottings. Anne, create
d Countess of Oglethorpe in the Jacobite Honours Lists had retur
ned to Westbrook in 1722 to make a home for her brother James, a
nd she kept contact with sister Eleanor, Marquise de Mezieres wh
o was her link with the Jacobite Court in France. Another siste
r Fanny (so cruelly maligned by Thackeray in Henry Esmond" ) mar
ried Jean Francois de Belgrade,Marquis des Marches de Piedmon
t whilst the fourth sister Molly eventually married the Marqui
s de Bersompierre and, after her husband's death, carried onhe
r career in a minor post at the Court of Spain. These last two s
isters, so far as we know, did not return to Godalming, but Elea
