Stratford, Edwin, Bishop of theOgden Fourth Ward, Weber Stake o
f Zion, Utah, was born Feb. 6, 1833, at Maidon, Essex, England
, the son of George Stratford and Eliza Barwell. He joined the C
hurch in 1851, labored five years as a local missionary in Engla
nd, married Marianna Crabb in 1855 and emigrated to America in 1
856. He presided over the Saints in Iowa, while residing tempora
rily in the States, and came to Utah in 1861. After residing i
n Farmington and Providence for a number of years Bro. Stratfor
d became a permanent resident of Ogden in 1872. Here he establis
hed a flourishing furniture business. He was ordained a Sevent
y in 1862,ordained a High Priest June 6, 1877, and acted as fir
st counselor to Bishop Nils C. Flygare of the Ogden First Ward f
rom 1877 to 1883. After that he presided as Bishop of said war
d from 1883 to 1887 and was Bishop of the Fourth Ward, Ogden, fr
om 1887 till the time of his demise, which occurred in Ogden, Oc
t. 8, 1899. He left a wife, seven sons and two daughters.

A Tribute
Edwin Stratford, oldest son of George and Eliza Barwell Stratfor
d, was born Feb. 6, 1833 at Maldon, Essex, England. In his boyho
od Days he worked for his uncle Abraham who wasa ship builder i
n Maldon. The family then moved to London where he became anews
boy. The next move was back to Maldon where Edwin secured employ
ment inhis Uncle James' gardens and it was then he decided to b
ecome a gardener.

A Tribute
At this time he was inclined to accept the religion of the "Bret
hren ofFreedom of Thought" when he heard Charles W. Penrose pre
ach of the divine teachings of Joseph Smith. He became much inte
rested and was baptized into the Church of Jesus Christ of Latte
r-Day Saints by Elder Penrose, on the 9th Day of May, 1851. In J
uly he was made treasurer of the emigration fund and also cler
k of the branch. From the time he was ordained a priest he preac
hed the gospel in several of the villages of Essex.
