from 'Vicar Favour and his Times'
page 27
Oliver Heywood describes him as anexcellent scholar, a good pre
acher and a man of unblamable life. Dr. Midgleyin the Gibbet L
aw Book, usually ascribed to Bentley, chooses him amongst hisfo
ur only notabilities, the other being archbishop tillotson, bish
op Lake, and Dr. Wilkinson, and says of him:-
"Mr Robert Booth, curate of Sowerby Bridge chapel, a Man of tha
t Worth and Excellency in Learning and Divinity, thathe deserve
s the title of another Apollos, and seems to have been a Man, li
lke the Prophet Jeremiah and St. John Baptist, separated from th
e Womb to theoffice Ministerial, so well compounded for Tempera
nce and Health in the Constitution of his Body, so industrious a
nd indefatigable in the Labours of his Study, and so Divinely Co
ntemplative in the Exercise of his Mind: that he appeareth unt
o all Men to be wholly compounded and made up of Virtue, bein
g a Stranger to all things but the Service of Heaven: for when h
e spoke to his Congregation from the Pulpit, it was with that po
wer of Truth and elegance of Stile, that he charm'd his Hearer
s unto Love and Admiration."
