"This was theJames Oates who came as a child to Ovenden Hall wh
en his mother married Joseph Furness."
"James Oates had died June 25th, 1695. By his will he had lef
t 500 pounds each to his seven daughtes and had committed the tu
ition of Johnand Joseph, the children of his late brother Samue
l Furness, and their portions which had been committed to himsel
f and Abraham Hall now deceased, 'the said John Furness unto Joh
n Brearcliffe of Halifax, and the said Joseph unto Henry Gream
e of Skircoat." John Brearcliffe was, of course, uncle to John F
urness.
