Joseph Fournes, sonof William Fourness, a clothier. He marrie
d (1) by licence at Halifax parish Church 7 June 1637, Effam, wi
dow of John Mitchell, of Boothtown (Hx.Reg.),to whose husband h
e had been apprenticed; (2) Phebe, widow of James Oates, ofLand
sHead in Northowram, and daughter of James Dickenson. He becam
e a wealthy mand, and was a strong supporter of the Parliamentar
ians. A feoffee ofthe Waterhouse Charity, a governor of Heat
h School, and a member of the PiousUses Commission. In 1654 h
e was Chief constable of Agbrigg and Morley. Byhis will he gav
e 20s each to the poor of Ovenden, Northowram and Halifax, 20
s for a funeral sermon and 8s rent charge to the minister of Il
lingworth Chapel (Hx An. Soc. Tans., 1905. pp218-19)
