John Drake the elder ofHorley grene, yeoman, made his will 24t
h June, proved 22nd August, 1622. Heleft to his eldest son, Jo
hn, some furniture, probably as heirlooms, to hissecond son, Th
omas, the first and next presentatnion to the curch and rector
y of Thorneton in Craven which he had of the Grant of William Li
ster esq. afterward knight. He was indebted to his third son, F
rancis Drake in 140 pounds, he bequeathed to him 160 more. At t
he marriage of his fourth son, Daniel,he promised to buy him la
nds of value of 20pounds a year; he ordered the same to be done
, but if he would have money, then 340 to be paid to him. To hi
s youngest son Samuel 340 and the residue of goods to Thomas, Fr
ancis, Daniel and Samuell, the two last being appointed executor
s.
The pedigree of thefamily of Drake is too long, and contains to
o many branches to be inserted here. Suffice it to say, that th
is John Drake, was the eleventh in descent (both inclusive) fro
m William de Schepden, temp. Ed I., with whom the pedigreecomme
nces; and who Granted lands to his son John in 1306. His fathe
r was Thomas of Horley green, who commences the pedigree in Dugd
ale's Visitation ofKnaresboroguh, 15th August, 1665.
