1613, Jan 1 Caleb Waterhouse, Hal. honestus
Caleb Waterhouse was the third son of Michael Waterhouse of Wood
house,and Grace (Wilkinson) his first wife. He was baptised, 2
1st September 1561.On the 20th January 1610 he bought Shibde
n Hall, Southowram for 1,200 fromArthur Ingram gent, and John H
arvie both of London. He had previously had the premises on a n
ine years lease from Samuel Armitage a mortagee for 500 pounds
, and no doubt a relative of his second wife. As has been alrea
dy stated, he resold Shibden Hall etc in 1612, to Jane, widow o
f Brian Crowther, and to John Hemingway her nephew; which latte
r died a minor, in the guardianship of Samuel Lister, of Shibde
n Hall. He married Ellenor, daughter of William Brook and Eliza
beth his wife, and by her had issue, Michael (who had Issac, Joh
n, Caleb, Joshua, Helen, Mary and Susan); JOHN of Washer lane, (
had Anthony; John from whom is descended, in the seventh generat
ion, both inclusive, thepresent representative of the Halifax b
ranches of the family, Mrs. CatherineGrace Doherty-Waterhouse)
; andJOSHUA (had Dorothy and Mary). By his second wife, Elizabet
h, daughter of John Armytage of Huddersfield Hall, (who survive
d and married a gentleman of the name of Winter) he had SAMUEL
, SUSAN, and GRACE.
His will was made 11th November 1613, proved 23rd March 1613-14
. He mentioned that he had a lease unexpired, of certain corn m
ills at or near Skipton; and bequeathed from the profits thereof
, the following sums in the orderplaced. To his children Susa
n and Grace 50 pounds each, then Ann the next 110, John 200, Sus
and and Grace 50 each, Samuel 100, then his wife Elizabeth 50, t
hen son John 40 and the residue to his five children, Anne, Joh
n , Sara, Grace, and Susan. He left to Joshua, son of his lat
e brother Abraham, 3 pouns; to his brother Jacob's two childre
n 1 each; and to Mr. Dr. Favour, JohnBoyes and Humfrey Drake, h
is overseers 2 each.
Item. I doe give and bequeath to Nathaniell Waterhouse my broth
er, forty shillinges to be bestowed on a peece of place.
Item. I give to Michael Waterhous my sonne, a silver bowle, toJ
oshua my sonne my silver cupp or beaker, and to either of the
m a gilded spoone; to John my son, two silver spoones theone a g
uilded, thother unguilt; to Anne my daughter, other two silver s
poones, thone guilt, thother unguilt.The rest of my place I gi
ve to and amongst my wife and my three youngest children.
