A man truly honest and religious, who gave by will 20 pounds t
o pious uses. He was the half brother of Nathaniel Waterhouse
, the great Halifax benefactor and founder of the Waterhouse cha
rities. We have already given the descent of the Waterhouses o
f Shibden Hall, lords of the manor of Halifax. thismember of t
he family, however, was of another branch; and their common ance
stor was Richard Waterhouse of Hollins,Warley, who married twice
, and by hisfirst wife (a Maude) had Joh, Richard, from whom th
e Waterhouse of Shibden Hall, and

  1. Robert Waterhouse, the third son, constable of Skircoat 1454
    -5.His will is dated 20th July 1481. He had two sons, John; a
    nd Gilbert, who had Robert and others.
    ......"And to shewe p'te of my thankefulnes unto Almightie Go
    d I give and bequeath to the Governors of the lands and revenue
    s of the ffree gramer schoole of Quene Elizabeth within the vica
    ridge or p'ishe of Hallifax, to the use of said schoole tenne po
    undes. Alsoe I give and bequeathto the buildinge of new or rep
    aireinge of the old almes houses within the towne of Hallifax ot
    her tenne poundes, which shalbe paid by myne executors to the ha
    ndes of myne overseers, to be imployed as aforesaid, if the sam
    e p'ceed by other helps within one yeare after my decease, other
    wise I refer the imployment thereof to myne ov'seers of this m
    y last will to anye other good usesas to them shal seeme goode
    . Itm I give unto the poore of Skircott widows,catifes, and fa

    He recited that he had made ain indenture in trust for purpose
    s of his will, 12th October 1609, to Daniel Foxcroft of Halifax
    , Anthony wade of Skircott, Caleb Waterhouse of Shibden Hall an
    d John Crowther of Ovenden, yeomen. He bequeathed to his son Sa
    muel, two tenements and a farm in in Southowram, and also an ann
    uity of 5 pounds out of Shibden Hall and certain milnes in Sout
    howram; to his son Michaell land tenements, milnes etc near Newc
    astle-on-Tyne; to his sons Robert and John jointly, lease of th
    e scyte of the manor of Barnesley, with the demeane lands etc ex
    cept all tithes and tythe lathe etc to his sons Daniel and Isaa
    c jointly, all his tythes of corne, hay, wool, lambe etc in Bar
    nsley, belonging to the rectory of Silkston; also one lathe in t
    he south east side of Barnsely Hall, calledthe Tythe lathe. T
    o his five daughters Suzan, Mary, Helen, Grace and Elizabeth h
    e left 1000 pounds each, to remain in the hands of his executors
    , theypaying after the rate of 7 pouns 10s per 100 towards thei
    r education. He also bequeathed legacies to his brother Caleb
    ; his half brother Nathaniel: Symon, his brother Michaell's son
    ; his daughter in law Elizabeth Waterhouse, andher daughter, hi
    s first grand child; Josua, son of Abraham Waterhouse, and other
    s. He appointed as excutors, his wife and sons Anthonie and Sam
    uel eachto give bond in 1,000 pounds as supervisors, Dr. Favou
    r vicar of Halifax, brother Daniel Foxcroft of Halifax, brothe
    r Caleb Waterhouse, brother John Crowther, neighbour Anthony Wad
    e of the King Crosse, and his cousins Wm Slater ofHalifax and M
    icaell Waterhouse of Skircott.
