Will of Noble Ladd
"In the name ofGod Amen, this twenty-second Day of October th
e year of our Lord One thousandseven hundred and eighty-two
: I Noble Ladd Sr. of Surry County, North Carolina State, Plante
r, being very sick and weak in body, but of perfect mind andmem
ory, thanks be given unto God for the same, and calling to min
d the mortality of my body, and knowing that it is appointed fo
r all men once to die, do make and ordain this my last will an
d testament; that is to say principallyand first of all, I giv
e and recommend my soul unto the hands of God that gave all; an
d for my body I recommend it to the earth to be buried in a Chri
stian like manner at the discretion of my executors, nothing dou
bting but at the resurrection i sHall receive the same again b
y the Mighty Power of God, and as touching such worldy estate wh
erewith it hath pleased God to bless me inthis life, I give an
d dispose of the same in manner and form following thatis to sa
y--
"In the first place I give and bequeath unto Judith my dearly be
loved wife two negroes, viz Jacob and Chloe--during the term o
f her naturallife, if she is in widowHood, and if inc ase she w
hould marry again then I will the aforesaid two negroes viz Jaco
b and chloe to my two sons, viz, Amos and Constantine, also I gi
ve and bequeath to said wife during the term of herwidowHood fo
ur cows and calves, one feather bed, on roan horse, and half m
ypewter. Also I give and bequeath unto my beloved son Amos Lad
d, one Negro named Peter: Also I give and bequeath to my belove
d son Constantine Ladd one Negro named Will; Also I give and be
queath unto my daughter Judith five shillings sterling; also I g
ive and bequeath unto my daughter Elizabeth five shillings sterl
ing; also I give and bequeath Hulda one cow and calf. Also I gi
ve and bequeath to my duaghter Polly, one feather bed, one cow a
nd calf and one white horse called Webster; Also I give and bequ
eath to my daughter Anna five shillings sterling. Also I give a
nd bequeath unto my daughter Ede one Negro wench named Dilse; an
d I give and bequeath unto my beloved son Joseph Laddtwo Negroe
s viz abraham and Doll by name, also one feather; Lastly I giv
eand bequeth to my son William Ladd, two Negroes named Dinah an
d Jacob, whichsaid Jacob is a boy; together with all my workin
g tools and untinsils of husbandry, and four hundred and fifty a
cres of land whereon I live, together witHall within and withou
t doors about the same -- nevertheless I will and require tha
t if my wife Judith sHall live with her two youngs children vi
z William and Edee on my said plantation that she sHall have a
n equal share of theprofits arising therefrom for her maintenan
ce during the term of her widowHood, and I do hereby utterly dis
allow revoke and disanull all and every other former testament w
ill and bequest and executors by me in any wise before thistim
e named will and bequested, ratifying and confirming this and n
o other to be my last will and testament in witness whereof I ha
ve hereunto set my hand and seal the Day and year first above wr
